Side Affects is studio major Emily Grant’s senior exhibition. In this body of work, she utilizes a variety of 3D media to depict the impact that medication has had on her mental health journey.
Artist Statement
After years of struggling with my mental health and searching for medications that work for me, I have finally begun to find peace.
The large pill sculptures, Vyvanse I and Vyvanse II compare the ways a medication has made me feel, showing its benefits as well as its drawbacks. The wall of pills, Coping, explores the relationship between coping mechanisms and shared fears. A mound of empty pill bottles shows the routine lengths people go through to feel “normal.”
I share this body of work to emphasize the huge impact medication has had on my life. I hope that others will feel less alone in their own mental health journeys.
